I have had the Q-tower system for a number of years, through three different vehicles.All in all a great rack system, except for two items:The cost of the little parts that you need to convert from one vehicle to the other are stratospheric! I really don't mind Yakima making their money on the big ticket items such as towers, boxes, etc. but the little adapter items should be priced more fairly.It seems to me that once you are locked into a Yakima system they fully intend to hose you on the little things.Too bad.Further, the Yakima website is a mess to try and find the specific little items and accessories that they intend on hosing you with!

Topeak Explorer Bicycle Rack with Disc Brake Mounts and Spring Review

This is the second time I fell for the "one size fits all" statement from these third-party bike part manufacturers. I tried to install this on my wife's Giant mountain bike with disc brakes... an hour later and a few modifications I got it to fit. If you are planning on using this rack WITH the Topeak basket ("MTX Basket Rear" TB2005) on a women's bike STOP NOW!

(Women's and small frames:) The mounting holes on the frame for the rack are too low and, due to the angle of the seat post, the seat will hit the basket. Though the instructions state "bend to accommodate proper installation", you will have to create a severe bend to 'accommodate' the frame on a women's bike or small frame. I also had to slide the rack far back on the rails in order for the Topeak basket to be able to slide all the way forward without hitting the seat.

Also, once the slides are bent they tend to bend quite easily. I ended up having to marry-up another pair of slides to these in order to make them rigid after bending them. At this time is when I noticed that the rails from my D***a rack were 50% thicker than the Topeak ones and much harder to bend.

The post/standoff that clears the disc brakes was fine. We have the standard Giant-issued disc brakes and used the factory-bored holes int he frame. No problem there. I did, however, have to use two-washers on one side to keep the bolt from hitting the sprocket (which is advised in the instructions.)

Other than that, the frame is well-suited for large frames and men's bikes with disc brakes on the rear. If you have a quick-release seat post, I recommend using it to attach your rack slides. You will find you have to bend the slides less or not at all.

Other points:
- Instructions are in English, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese and Chinese. It also shows great exploded diagrams and good illustrations of an installation.
- Comes with two rear tail light mounts for the optional "RedLite" (TMS004) and "RedLite UFO" (TMS017). The Tail Light mount has mounting holes 80mm apart.
- Made in Taiwan, if that matters to you.
- 6061 T6 Aluminum tubular construction with stainless steel fitting bracket (which I have been calling "slides")
- From placard: "1 Size fits all 26" or 700C frames"

I give it 2 stars for the sheer hassle of installation and blatant disregard for installation on women's bike frames.

Yakima BedHead Truck Rack Locking Review

I'm gonna make this short - it's a little difficult to mount securely to some rails, particularly if you have a bed liner.Second, they're a little on the expensive side.My recommendation - buy some cheap traps, and mount them to a board.Use a cable lock to secure your bikes.And, it will keep your bikes down out of the road bugs.

Thule 450R CrossRoad Railing Roof Rack Foot Pack (Set of 4) Review

I own a 2002 Volvo V70 XC with factory mounted roof rails. These feet fit the rack perfectly. My friend owns a Mitsubishi SUV with a completely different style of factory mounted roof rails, and this product fits his car too!

I mounted the feet with no trouble and no extra tools. The Thule lock cylinders (you have to order them separately) are no problem to install. There are only two things- you have to make sure that you by the Aero load bars (these feet don't work with anything else) and you have to make sure that you buy the correct length load bars as well because of how they are constructed. I have the 53 inch load bars and they work perfectly. I suggest using the rack fitting guide on rackattack.com to figure out what size works for your car.

The solid construction and universal adaptability of this product mean that I will keep it even if I have to get rid of my car. These feet fit any shape rail securely.

I would recommend this product to anyone.

Topeak QR Beam Rack MTX Bicycle Rack Review

The mount looks great and works great with the Topeak bags that are designed for it.I bought the side frames also because I got the EXP bag with panniers.The rack mounts pretty fast and easy to your seat post and the frame supports also go on pretty quick.I also put the MTX fender on, which I wasn't sure would go on with the pannier frame.It all integrates perfectly.I am going to post a picture soon.Make sure you put it on tight and realize it is really a commuter rack.If you are using it while hitting rough trails on a mountain bike expect it to shift around some if you have much loaded on it.As for frame selection I chose the A frame and it was an incorrect decision for me and so exchanged it for the V.I was afraid the V frame would sit too close to my tire with the fender on so I opted for a high set up.You should try to mount it low so as not to raise the center of gravity or battle the weight of the filled bag.The reason for the A frame is if your mounting it on a small bike with a low seat with little clearance from seat to tire.The equivalent of a BMX bike.The Eframe should work for a lot to play it safe including road and mountain bikes.The V frame will work onquite a few as long as the tire isn't too big.I have a 26" mountain bike tire and it sits a few inches from the tire.Oh if you have a wedge under you seat you can probably keep it on but it is a tight fit.So far I love the look and other than one incident of it shifting have loved the performance.

Thule 987XT 6-Ski Adapter for Thule Hitch Mount Bike Racks Review

I just fitted this to my 998xt rack. It fits fairly well, and feels pretty secure. It's well made, and comes with all the accessories you'll need.

The downside is that it's impossible to get my shaped skis (Rossi Bandit B3s) into the rack the way they suggest (back to back). They do fit, but less securely, as individual skis. This reduces the capacity to 3 pairs of skis, and not 6.

Also the height of the rack, even with my relatively short skis, is insane - the tops of the skis stand a good 2 feet above the roofline of my SUV.

To be honest.... I wish I'd bought a roof rack, and just stuck with the Thule rack for my bike.

Yakima Mako Saddles Review

Yakima Mako saddles rule!

I can understand the impulse to save a few bucks by purchasing the landsharks or another brands saddles but don't do it.Why pay $3,000.00 for a fiberglass kayak and then beat the hull to death on your roof or worse yet lose the boat on the highway.

Yakima mako saddles adjust to many different hull shapes, hold the boat very securely and provide a bit of cushion for the boat over bumps.I have used these saddles on several different fiberglass and poly boats and have been extremely pleased with the hull contact.I have not seen hull abrasions and roughening at the site of contact that occurs with other saddles.While the slight movement of the boat while traveling takes some getting used too - this is the saddle flexing, not the boat moving in the saddles - this action gives the boat a bit of cushion on 4x4 or rough roads.Very secure at highway speeds.

Yakima Locking Blockhead Bike Mount w/Core Review

I got one of these today. It took 30 minutes to install in the bed of my truck. Works just like it should. Easy in and out. Lock works. It is only strong enough to keep honest people from stealing it. If you rocked it hard enough you could destroy it or rip the bike out of it. I work with metal. Its aluminum and its nice...but they aren't bulletproof. I would imagine there are bad ones, parts cut or bent just enough out of tolerance to make it useless. Mine works great though. Holds a big aluminum Giant Yukon in the back of my truck even with the way I drive.

Thule Echelon Roof Bike Mount Review

I have an older Peloton (517) but bought two of the Echelon (518) and really enjoy the difference in quality and ease of use. The head is heavy and sturdy and the locks are easier to reach. Actually, everything else (the tire tray) is about the same as the Peloton - it is the head and the mounting bracket that make them different. The bracket is also extremly solid, securing the carrier completely across the base of the head. The Peloton has more of a U-bolt type of bracket and it always makes me feel as if the bike could wobble a bit at high speed.
I am a faithful Prime member and truly buy most everything from Amazon, including expensive cameras and tools. But for some reason I actually had a couple of returns with this product. I had ordered another Peloton first, but it came with a bolt that was not threaded properly, so I returned it and got an Echelon but it had scratches on the tray, so I returned that also and got the two Echelons at East Providence Cycle, my local bike shop.
Let me also add that no store is more accomodating with returns than Amazon. I am always confident in my purchases that they will be stressfree that way.

Thule 400XTR Aero Rapid Roof Rack Foot Pack (Set of 4) Review

Pros: Looks nice, aerodynamic. Cheaper than Yakima.
Cons: Shoddy quality. Cheaper than Yakima.

Used for 17' fiberglass kayaks.

To carry our touring kayaks, we purchased the Thule Aero system for our Prius, because it was significanly cheaper than the Yakima. To work properly, one needs to purchase the correct Fit Kit for the specific vehicle; this Fit Kit is attached to the foot with a plastic-handled bolt. The metal parts in the bolt handles bent during installation, and the cheap rivet holding one of the handles to its bolt sheared in two. There are plastic tabs in the handles that are supposed to fit into a slot on the Fit Kit parts, but 3 out of 4 tabs snapped off. Fortunately, the locks still manage to hold the handles onto the feet. The supplied measurements didn't work for our Prius, and we had to improvise.

Another disadvantage is that the aerodynamic bars need to be parallel with the ground, which doesn't happen if the vehicle's roof is curved (again, think Prius or VW bug.) This doesn't seem like an issue until the accessories are added to the bars, and they wind up tilted and not parallel front-to-rear. Since this results in only a single point of contact on the boat hull, this puts undue strain on the kayaks as well as the fittings holding the attachments to the bar. In this case, a round bar would work perfectly, as one could rotate the accessories until they're parallel and horizontal, supporting the boat across the entire pad. Due to the poor contact with the cradles, the boats are not secure while in the rack, and easily wobble 12" side-to-side. Plus, the amount of pressure needed on the straps to minimally hold the boat in the cradles deforms the hull. Bow/Stern tiedowns are crucial to avoid highway fly-aways.

We've got a Yakima rack on our pickup truck, and it works like a charm. I regret not purchasing a Yakima rack system for the Prius instead of Thule.

If you have a flat-roof vehicle, like a station wagon or SUV, the Thule Aero system would probably work very well for you. Curved roof, think round bars instead.

Materials used in bike rack are high quality items that hold together well and make for easy installation. A word of note about the directions, the bracket that mounts to the bedrail has inaccurate data on my model year of truck, this caused me to have to undo part of the assembly to get it right. Size it up before you assemble, because yours may be wrong as well. I called the merchant on this and they replied that the instructions are only suggestions. What a cop out! Anyhow, my kit will mount two bikes and you can add more with an additional accessory item, so get out and enjoy the outdoors.

About Allen Bike Racks
In 1967, after a few years of working on the aerospace technology for the Apollo missions, Dick Allen was out of a job. Government cutbacks led Allen, a Harvard-trained physicist, to transform his garage hobby into a new industry. A cycling enthusiast, inventor, and family man, Allen had a personal need for a bike-carrying device. On weekends, he would take his sons and wife to Cape Cod or the White Mountains of New Hampshire. What proved difficult time and again was the transport of his family's bicycles. Rather than fight through inconvenience with twine and a dinged car, Allen sought an answer for himself as well as a market in which he foresaw major growth possibilities.
Always a pathfinder, Allen took to work in his Lincoln, Massachusetts garage in search of a more efficient way to transport bikes. Drafting designs during the day and constructing them throughout the night, he put together a model made of electrical conduit, metal strapping, and fire hose casings (for padding). At first, the Allens' tested the prototype on weekend excursions. Finding the first trunk-mounted rack to be a success, Dick started Allen Bike Racks. Dealer acceptance came quickly, and by 1971 Allen Bike Racks were sold nationally through a number of major bicycle distributors. Today, the company owns over three dozen patents and offers a versatile product line of bike racks while Dick's son Alex now owns and operates the business. What started out as a small garage run operation now operates three warehouses nationally, two factories abroad, and has products sold in more than a dozen countries around the world.

Thule 997 Goal Post Hitch Mount Truck Adapter for Thule Canoe and Kayak Carriers Review

This rack is sturdy and easy to install. It carries my 16 ft canoe on my Explorer Sportrac with ease. My only gripe is that Thule uses a bolt with nut welded in the hole that fixes the hitch to the receiver. I prefer a plain hole so that I can put my locking mechanism in it. However, it is fairly easy to drill out the nut and use the lock instead.

In my opinion, this and other Thule products are well built and a good value.

Yakima Boa Bike Rack Review

Before buying this mount, measure the distance between your bike's fork dropouts to the rear wheel. Then look at the recommended crossbar spacing for your vehicle in the Yakima Q Clip instruction booklet. If the measurements are not similar (ie. rear wheel not centered over the rear crossbar, short roofline and long wheelbase bike), then the rear wheel will hang far behind the rear crossbar and there's a good chance that the rear towers will shift forward when transporting your bike. This can result in roof damage from the shifting clips and the bike's rear wheel contacting and scratching the roof.

The Boa is Yakima's most economical rooftop bike mount and it shows. If you live in a low crime neighborhood and remove your bike and rack when you are away from your car, this mount will probably work just fine for you. Or if you absolutely need to minimize the footprint of the rack when it's off your vehicle.

The Boa pod is mostly made of glass-filled polymer. There is a flimsy plastic cover that is secured by the skewer and covers the heads of the 3 hex mounting bolts. Unfortunately, even when locked, this cover can easily be pried and cracked open by hand revealing the 3 bolt heads. I complained and Yakima responded that they only provide theft deterrence and cannot guarantee against theft. This does not even approach deterrence.

The Boa mount comes with Yakima's universal locking skewer with a polymer lever, stainless rod, and round steel nut. If the skewer is closed and locked but the handle is in the wrong orientation and there's insufficient tension, then it's a simple matter to rotate the handle counterclockwise to loosen the nut and steal your bike. The lever and cam are plastic and will deform and wear with use. When no bike is loaded, the only way to secure the mount is to tighten the nut further and then close and lock the skewer. However, adjusting the nut defeats the purpose of providing a long-throw skewer.

Adding a long tray converts the mount into a Copperhead mount. However, given the security concerns, I returned this mount and purchased a Yakima Steelhead mount instead. The Steelhead has a clamshell clamping design and is mostly metal. It comes with a stainless metal skewer that has a special locking pin and e-clip on the nut. When the skewer is locked, the clamshell cannot open and the skewer nut cannot be removed even if it is not tightened and tensioned against the mount body. As with the Boa, make sure that the skewer lever rests against the crossbar when locked so that it can only be turned clockwise tightening (and not loosening) the nut.

If you don't want to spend much more than the cost of the Boa but want to use your SKS lock cores, consider purchasing a Steelhead body (new or used) and a Rocky Mounts Lariat tray. You will need to drill a hole in the tray to mount the Yakima head. The Rocky Mounts crossbar mount is compatible with Yakima's round bars and comes with all hardware, and their wheel strap is also less expensive than Yakima's.

SARIS CYCLE ON PRO HITCH RACK 2 BIKE Review

This is a quality bike rack. Very easy to use, durable, and bikes are secure on it - no wobbling. It is quite a bit more expensive than other racks, but well worth the money. I have had hitch mount racks in the past and this is much better. The bikes do not hit up against each other and you don't have to use bungee cords on the wheels or handlebars.

Yakima Rattler Wheelstrap 1 pair Review

I had to buy a pair of these after a friend donated a Yakima rack to me that was missing the straps. These are made of very heavy duty plastic, and the ratcheting action on them will clamp your tires down as tight as you need to. I just hope they stand up to a few years of being in the rain, sun, heat and cold.

(Update, 6 months later) One word of caution. Because these are made of some kind of plastic, DO NOT torque them down really really tight on your wheels, or else the teeth of the strap can get worn down in one spot. This can make the buckle jam and make it almost impossible to release. You'll be looking for a utility knife to cut the thing off. I was carrying a heaving old Schwinn on my roof, and tightened mine down a little too much. Almost didn't get it back off.

Softride 24852 Access HD 4-Bike Rack Review

After comparing this product with Thule racks, I was persuaded to purchase the Softride mainly because of how it opens parallel to the ground for easy bike loading.I opted for the HD version for extra durability.

Pros:
The rack does lower to a level where it the bike does not have to be lifted above shoulder-height for most adults, and since the arms stay parallel to the ground, the bike stays perpendicular to the ground the entire time.While driving, I do not hear any rattling, and the rack only quietly vibrates back and forth from the movement of the vehicle.This rack gets the job done and gets easier with practice.It does take a bit of strength to raise and lower though.

Cons:
The plastic tie down straps that help secure the bike frame to the rack arms are terribly difficult to use.Either the holes need to be larger or the straps more pliable as it is very frustrating to try to attach them to the arms each time the bike is loaded and unloaded.

I did not realize that the other version of this rack (the non heavy duty version) comes equipped with anti-sway cradles - my own fault (FYI - this HD rack is supposedly being phased out).To compensate, I use a bungee cord to strap the lower bike frame to the vertical part of the rack so the bike does not sway forward and backward with vehicle movements.To prevent the bike frame from scratching, I padded the vertical bike rack bar with black foam pipe insulation strapped on with plastic tie-downs.

The locking pin that secures the rack to the vehicle's hitch is not long enough to go through both sides of my 2" hitch.I ended up purchasing a longer locking hitch from WalMart for around $22.

As with most racks, women's and children's bikes may need a top adapter bar so they can attach to the bike rack.I purchased a Softride adapter bar, and it is very difficult to open (has a tiny button that is very hard to push in) - would not recommend it.Summary:
I would recommend the non HD (not heavy duty) Access Dura Softride bike rack since it has anti-sway cradles (though I do not know how well these work).I like the parallel design and sturdy construction, but the tie down straps are difficult to handle.

This is typical solid Thule system.The pictures of this product differ from the actual product-- notice that the picture shows the towers inserting into a slot on the bottom of the cross bar.What you actually get is different-- it is actually identical to the Thule 450 system where the cross bar inserts through a square hollow shaft in the tower.so you are actually getting the equivalent of the 450 towers, cross bars and locks, at somewhat of a discount from those parts priced separately.
System seems nice for putting on and taking off relatively easily, as for the most part I do not want to keep cross bars on car very much (just extended vacations and weekends).

Hollywood Racks HR300 Road Runner 3-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver) Review

Halfway out to Colorado on the rack's maiden voyage, I looked in the rear-view mirror to see the outermost bike tilted at a 30 degree angle.The rubber straps still gripped the bike frame, but one of them had itself slipped off the rack.No wonder the instructions say to be sure to tie the separate fabric strap securely to the frame; this keeps the rubber strap bracket from shaking loose.
Additionally, the two metal arms you see on top are spaced too widely to accomodate many children's bikes.
I haven't checked out any of the competition, to see if they're any better.

Hollywood Racks HR9200 Traveler 5-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver) Review

We purchased the 5-bike rack and it is working out pretty well.It is challenging to get all the bikes on the rack only because of the way they make bike frames these days, but you can adjust the rack to hold the bike up in any different number of ways because of extra connecting straps and supports.The company sent the flag (which wasn't included in the original packaging)after we called their 800 number quickly and free of charge.The only problem with the rack is that when you travel on gravel or dirt roads, it bounces around quite a bit.Overall, it is a great product.
