Thule 554XT Hang Two Rooftop Surfboard Carrier Review

Was excited to get this as my crossbars are very close together and lateral stability was key. My board is 11'3" L 29.5" W and over 4" thick. Had everything set up all nice and neat until I tried to get the straps on. Except they are too short to hook on for my board. Don't see how any stand up board or thicker and wider board would fit with the included straps so I was back to standard compression straps. So much for the quick convenience. But the captures are nice and work well. So hopefully Thule will send me some longer straps when they wise up and make them bigger. I did call to complain. If your dimensions are smaller than mine (29.5" w and about 4.5" thick) then you'll be fine. The straps were short by about 2+ inches at their longest.

Highland 35036 Black Universal Car Roof Top Basket Carrier Review

It works as it should. The straps stay tight during the whole trip. The rubber pads aren't the tightest fit on the feet but that just is an issue when the rack is stored. Not a big deal but worth mentioning so you can make sure they are there before putting it on the car. Very light weight and sturdy.

Thule 43050 Tracker II Complete Roof Rack System with Load Bars (50-Inch Bars) Review

We received this product and it had some plastic pieces that were broken plus the load bars had scratches on them. It was obvious that someone had used it before.With that said we kept it because frankly its a roof rack and we didn't need it to be pretty.The functionality is great. Being able to remove the load bars with a push of two buttons is extremely useful.We were also happy that we could get a cargo box PLUS our tandem bike rack on this rack at the same time. You of course need to get the right cargo box to make that work. Would have gave it 5 stars if the product actually came new like advertised.

Hollywood Racks HR135 Tow N' Go 3-Bike Hitch Mount Trailer Towing Rack (2-Inch Receiver)) Review

It is a very well-built unit and very solid. My only problem is that my motorhome has a hidden hitch and I not only had to buy an extended hitch bar for my receiver but I had to have the bike rack cut about 4 inches above the hitch and extended out away from the motorhome for clearance. The hitch works fine for me and for most applications a longer hitch bar would be all that is necessary for it to work as it should. On my receiver there is not enough room for the standard hitch bar to go through the bike rack and still connect to the receiver.

Thule Criterium Bike Mount Review

I read for several days reviews of the Thule bike carriers over the net and also watched some videos of the different racks. I decided for the Criterium because of the sleek design. I'm comparing it with the Side Arm for example, which obviously you don't need to take the wheel off.

Another thing that I liked is that I didn't need any other accesory to attach it to the factory rack of my Toyota RAV4 2006. Even though you enter your car model and everything at Thule's site, it still appears a need of some adapter, but you don't need one, check the manual so you can see the way it attaches.

Installing it was VERY easy. Just a couple of minutes assemblying it and some other to install it.

I also purchased two lock cylinders that were installed in less that 3 minutes.

Overall I recommend this rack as the best option for the roof. It looks great, getting the bike on and off is FAST, attaching and detaching the rack (in case you need to) is fast also and no maybe no need of any adapter.

Hollywood Racks HR8100 Traveler 4-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (1.25-Inch Receiver) Review

I'm satisfied with this rack.It's well designed, easy to switch out, and sturdy.The hinge at the base allows easy access to our tailgate even when the rack is loaded.The only drawback is that the individual bike holders slip relative to each other over time such that bikes will not be parallel to the bumper but rather skewed at some angle.This can probably be easily remedied with some sort of stopper (i.e. electrical tape) but I'm yet to try this.

Hollywood Racks LHPC1 Locking Hitch Pin and Security Cable (1.25-Inch Receiver) Review

The hitch pin doesn't work with the Thule bike rack that I bought it for.It's too thick, and I have doubts that it would fit other racks.I may drill out the rack so that it can fit though as it seems like a reasonably well made pin for the price.

Thule Peloton Bike Mount Review

First off-- bikes go on and off in a snap. The very first time I used this rack, it probably took me less than a minute. One of the really nice features is the design of the quick-release skewer. The cam mechanism is built into the front of the tray. This has two advantages:
- The long lever means you can also have a lot of travel in the clamp. The skewer goes from being clamped down to being wide enough to remove the fork, even with "lawyer nipples," just by moving the lever. That means no fiddling with the bolt tension every time you want to put the bike on the rack--just drop it in and clamp it.
- The same lock core that locks the bike to the carrier, locks the carrier to the loadbar. Turn one key and the whole assembly is secured.

The rest of the Peloton gives a similar impression of attentive design. The strap that holds the rear wheel down is easy to attach and easy to release. I would say the only downside is the somewhat 1990s-Volvo aesthetics.

Hollywood Racks HR2000 Boomer 2-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver) Review

Best bike rack for the money and very easy to use. Handles two bikes very well without any problems, however, I found that the rack works better if two bikes are hitched, only reason that my moutain bike's frame is slightly larger than most so the top clamp will not fully secure the bike, so instead I had to use a 1.5 inch small piece of pipe to mimic a second bike to get the best grib. Best of all the rack came with both locks for the hitch and the bike clamp, very strong construction and nice gray finish. The swing down action to allow opening of rear gate is also a nice feature.

Topeak BabySeat Child Bike Seat Rack (Disc Mount Version) Review

We purchased a spare rack so we could move our daughter between bikes on long rides. The Topeak rack is extremely sturdy and I never worry about whether it will support the little one.

This rack works on bikes with and without disc brakes. My bike has discs, my wife's does not. We use the same rack on both. I thought this version would have better resale than the standard one.

The rack contains several sets of stays to connect the rack to the seat stays (these are the arms sticking out the front of the rack). Unfortunately, there is a fairly large difference between the sizes, so we were unable to get the rack completely level on either bike. Functionally, it's not a big deal. Aesthetically, I would just prefer that the rack be level.

The rack is also useful without a seat mounted, though the square side rails make it less than ideal. It's fine for a trunk bag, but many paniers will not mount correctly.

Thule Wheel On Bike Mount Review

This wheel carrier worked well to get the bike wheel out of our smallish car. It definitely worked better than an earlier model we previously tried. The wheel feels secure in the mount and does not spin around while you are driving. I would buy this product again- and I am picky.

Bell Ride 'N Haul Rear Bike Rack Review

This works about as advertised but there is a tolerance problem. The hole that the seat post goes through is designed too small. First you have to figure out a way to pry this open a small amount. This isn't very easy since it isn't designed to bend much. Took a while to do this but then it seems to work reasonably well.

Yakima HitchLock with Core Review

I bought this hitch lock for a 2002 yakima full swing bike carrrier that I purchased used.The lock traveled 4000 miles holding the carrier in place.It is easy to use except you can not fit the key hole cover on as it was too tight.That wasn't significant and didn't effect the locking mechanism.Overall good lock for this carrier.If you have questions about which lock will fit your carrier, call Yakima they had great customer support and told me exactly what to buy.

Softride Access Dura 4-Bike Hitch Rack Review

The design of this rack is perfect.It works flawlessly on my GMC Acadia, swinging down and out of the way so the hatch can open (and you can stand in-between the bikes and the vehicle - load your luggage, grab your helmets, etc.).The removeable support arms are a great feature.I like the convoluted rubber padding in the support cradles because lots of bikes have bare cables running under the crossbars and this gives the cable a place to locate without being pinched.I like the fact that this rack comes with a 1.25" receiver adapter (I didn't need, but it looks sturdy).I like the integrated cable to lock the bikes onto the vehicle.I like the included hitch lock.These are necessary items that you don't have to buy separately.

Every part of this rack that is made of metal is sturdy and robust.Unfortunately (really really unfortunately), every plastic and rubber part is junk.On my first vacation using the rack, two rubber straps tore through.The first time I pulled on one, I had an uneasy feeling that it was stretching without much spring-back, and the feeling was confirmed a couple days later when the first strap broke.It was then that I knew why they include some velcro straps in the box (not documented anywhere, just in the box) - you are going to need them when the rubber straps break, which will be soon!The plastic anti-sway pieces - junky (uneasy feeling they will snap right off - nervously awaiting the day...).The plastic on the ends of the support bars - junky.The plastic on the sides of the top plate - ill fitting and junky.

If you can wait, postpone your purchase until Thule or Yakima copy this design, then buy from them so you know it will last and not leave you in a fix when something breaks out in the field.

Hollywood Racks B3 Baja 3-Bike Trunk Mount Rack Review

This is very sturdy. It came fully assembled in the box and it was easy to mount on my car. All it took was some adjusting of the straps. My ten speed fits well but my old Schwinn beach cruiser, which has an arched and curved frame, does not fit well. My sons bikes also didn't fit. The frames were too small and fat. This is more ideal for adult bikes with straight-angled frames.

Planet Bike Double Ended Cable Bicycle Car Rack Cable (10 mm x 84 cm) Review

I've had this chain for 6 months, used it maybe 40 times in mostly low-to-medium risk areas for securing a quick-release front wheel on my bike. No problems yet.

It certainly feels thick and solid, but like any chain on the market, it can surely be cut in seconds with the right tool.

Hollywood Racks HR520 Road Runner 5-Bike Hitch Mount Rack (2-Inch Receiver) Review

The Hollywood Rack is a decent rack, but definitely has some quirks.
assembly is straightforward, but getting the bikes onto the rack requires some
careful maneuvering - and getting 5 bikes on at the same time (which is the capacity of the rack, they say) is impossible without an advanced engineering degree.
In addition, the "stability" bar that folds down doesn't do a lot - you have to come up with some creative ways to use the supplied nylon/cordura cords to keep the bikes from moving around.
Finally, the rack itself has an inelegant, and somewhat ineffective, single screw to
keep it vertical and free from wobble -the screw loosens pretty quickly with road vibration, and it's way too small a diameter to hold the very wide main post in place,
particularly when the rack is fully loaded - this was not well thought at all.

however, we have used the rack several times without any disasters, and expect that we'll use it many more times - both locally and for road trips.
from what I've seen of other products out there, this is about average, and for the price we paid - probably got a good value.

Oh - important side note - you MUST have the adapter bar to mount (kids) mountain bikes or girls frames successfully and well - we forgot this and wound up having to by them locally - all they had were THULE bars - which cost $10 more per bar than the Hollywood version - and the THULE ones really stink!they joints rusted on the first day we had it, and the release nubs started to stick the next day.

Lund 601009 Non-folding Bike Carrier Attachment Review

I purchased the bike carrier for my cargo carrier.It arrived without the bolts (I'll tell you about this later). You have to alternate bikes, front tire - back tire - front tire to get all three on.It's really easy to attach and works great.You will have to purchase straps to secure the bikes to the carrier.The carrier is great but Lund International is not.

Now about the missing bolts. The first time I called Lund International the service rep was very friendly, took my address and phone number and said he would send the missing bolts right away. I called about a month later and the friendly service rep appoligized and said he would send them.I decided to purchase the bolts from the local hardware store instead. I wonder what their warrenty is like if they won't replace missing bolts.I hope this isn't standard business for the Lund Company.

Thule Helium 3 Bike Hitch Carrier Review

Over the past 40 years, I've either owned or regularly used about 10 different brands and types of bikeracks. While I can't give this rack five stars due to one minor problem, it is by far the best bikerack I've ever used or even heard about. I have it on the back of a 2006 Scion xA. (Did have to get a hitch put on the Scion, but this is very much worth it to be able to use a rack like this rather than some sort of a strapon kludge.)

As with all Thule racks (compared to several competitors), the stretchy rubber straps that hold the bike on the bikerack are easy to use, indeed even better than an older Thule rack I have on my Land Rover. (For instance, the Softride rack we have has straps and posts that are much more difficult to use.)

The posts that stick out the back are close together, so mountain bikes and kid's bikes fit on easily, without having to use the lower post of the bike as one of the attachments to the rack.

It really is light, though quite sturdy - you'll notice this especially when you pull up the little latch to let the rack come down so you can open the back of your car, or tilt it back up with one finger.

The integrated lock cable (locks with the same key that locks it into the hitch) is an elegant design. One cable comes out of the (as you look at it) left horizontal post, and another cable, with a lock on it, comes out of the top of the vertical post (yes it has a little cover on it to keep rain out of the lock, and the one in the horizontal post has a little keeper to keep it in place when not in use). You simply lock the two of these together (they're really quite short) over top of the bikes. This won't save your front wheels from being stolen, you might want another cable lock for that.

My only complaint is that, when I wanted to spread the saddles on the horizontal bar apart a bit to better accommodate three mountain bikes with lots of stuff on them (handlebar extensions, etc.), it was very, very hard. I do 250 pushups every morning and I couldn't get them to move by using my hands. I tried to use a large pair of Channelock pliers, which scraped up the saddle but didn't move it hardly at all. I then used an oil filter wrench, the type that has a length of nylon webbing that you wrap around the object (the saddle in this case), attach a 3/8" socket wrench. I twisted the saddle around the horizontal bar 2-3 times while gradually moving out or in as the case may be. That's really a minor problem, I figured I'll do this once and then never move them again.

Everything else in the installation is a snap. Everything is well-engineered, and you'll find lots of little details where Thule's experience and engineering expertise show - many incremental improvements over earlier Thule racks.

If I had to give this rack a grade using the US grading system, I'd give it an A-. I would give most of the other Thule and Yakima racks a solid B or B-, and some of them, like our Softride rack, a C+. And I was pretty happy with my Thule rack before, so this rack really raises the bar.

Final impression: best bikerack ever, if you just need to carry 3 bikes. Highly recommended, and worth getting a trailer hitch put on your car just so you can use it.

Yakima BeddyJo 2-Bike Truck Bed Mount Rack Review

Excellent carrier.I have a trailer hitch carrier as well and will choose this every time if there is room in the bed of the truck.The carrier holds the bikes firmly in place, is very easy to install and remove, and weighs very little so there is no lugging 20 or 30 lbs of steel around whenever you put it on or take it off.It is small and can be stored away in a corner when not in use.

Hollywood Racks F6 Expedition 3-Bike Trunk/Bumper Mount Rack Review

I got the F6 3-bike Trunk/Bumper Mount Rack for my wife for Christmas.She had purchased a cheap bike rack a couple of years back that was a total waste of money (could barely hold 2 bikes, did not hold them securely, one bike damaged during transport, etc.)The F6 is one of the sturdiest racks I've seen, and the cradles work great at keeping them secure.Easy to install on my 4Runner (though the top bar has to either rest on the upper rear brake light or the top of the rear window - not to keen about that), a bit more problematic on my Buick Century (not enough flat bumper for the bottom rests to sit on).The main problem is that neither of our bikes seem to fit the "standard" way, and the modified method leaves only rooom for two, not three, bikes.

But having said all that, we can make it work, it doesn't take long to install, the bikes ride securely, and we feel it is a well-made product.I also was VERY pleased with the price we paid through Amazon, which was about half of what it would have cost us at our local bike shop!

Saris Guardian 2-Bike Trunk Mount Rack Review

This is a pretty nice bike rack. It's sturdy enough to hold your bikes without worrying about them moving around and dislodging. The product manual is really difficult to understand, but the rack itself is simple enough that the manual isn't really needed. Overall, it's worth spending a little extra for this rack, as you don't have to worry about anything when using it! Plus, it's got a lifetime warrenty. Can't go wrong!

Thule Helium 2 Bike Hitch Carrier Review

I purchased Thule Helium 970 in July of 2009. I like the bike carrier because it is light and very convenient for every day use.
I just unsure about the rack anti - theft protection. You can't lock the receiver pin like on previous Thule models. And in locked position the Thule Stinger Swinger hitch knob will spin freely but you could easy release the hitch rotating the tighten bolt using a fine plumbing pliers at the open bolt space next to the knob.
I think the stinger assembly needs better anti - theft protection or Thule should design a lockable receiver pin for the model.

Yakima BigHorn 4 Bike Rack Review

We ride bikes several times per week.I say we meaning my me and my kids.So I carry 2-3 bikes on this several times per week.There are problems with heavy use.First of all, the pin that lets the rack fold down is 3/8 inch.Mine actually bent from running on the highway with 2-3 bikes.I drilled it out and put a 1/2 pin.Also, I didn't trust the threaded hitch pin that comes with the rack, it is also 3/8 inch and all that force is on the threads.If they break, by by rack.So I drilled it out to 1/2, used a regular class 2 1/2 pin and a product called a hich vise.$35 for the hitch vise, but the system works much better and is more stable.Finally, the sytem holds the bikes with flexible plastic pieces which slide on 1 1/4" metal poles.They hold the bikes well, but they also slide on the poles resulting in bikes ending up touching and rubbing paint off each other.Since I have no idea how anyone could fit four bikes on this rack, I went with mounts for three.You can remove a screw on the end of each pole, take the end cap off and slide off or on the pieces that hold the bikes on.I took one set off and then cut 1 1/4 inch PVC pipe to keep the other three sets equal distance from each other.This is dirt cheap and works extremely well, the bikes stay put on the poles and don't touch each other.Lots of modifications for this rack but it works well now.I think I would buy a more expensive one in the future but there aren't many choices if you need 1 1/4 and all I have ia a class 2 hitch so I can't use a 2 inch hitch.

Softride 26321 Acess Dura Assist 4 Bike Rack Review

I just received this rack, unpacked it and assembled. The assembly was easy requiring only 4 bolts. I mounted the rack on the car's 2 inch receiver hitch using 1 additional bolt supplied with the rack. This bolt takes all of the slop out from between the rack and the car. The assembly is rock solid on the car and does not vibrate around like many other racks. The rack and car act as one unit and this keeps the motion of the rack and bikes to a minimum. The rack tips back and my van's back door opens with lots of extra space. I mounted 3 bikes and all fit well from a 48cm to a 61cm. The assist part works well and the weight of 3 carbon road bikes holds it in the down position and it is easy to lift up. There is a feature to disable the assist when no bikes are on the rack. This allows the bike rack to be in the down position with no weight on the rack. All in all this is a well engineered rack that is well built and very strong. I will be adding some lube at the main hinge points as it is a bit stiff right out of the box but I am sure it will remain solid for years to come.
